n8n vs Kortix: a workflow canvas, or an open-source AI Operating System
Both n8n and Kortix self-host and run on your own models, so the shape of the work decides. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System: agents that finish open-ended work and land it as a change request. n8n draws fixed flows on a canvas. Match the tool to the job.

What n8n is
n8n's own docs describe it as a workflow automation tool that combines AI features with business process automation. You build on a visual canvas: place nodes for triggers, actions and logic, wire them together, and the engine runs that graph the same way on every run. Where a step needs logic no node provides, you add JavaScript or Python inline.
n8n runs self-hosted or on n8n Cloud. Its repository counts 1,500+ integrations and 9,000+ workflow templates, and lists OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and open-source models among the providers it connects to.
What Kortix is
Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System: your agents, their skills, your company memory, and every connector live in one git repo you own. It is open source, so you can read the code, fork it and audit it on Kortix on GitHub.
Every session runs on its own isolated sandbox and its own branch, with the repo already on it. The agent plans the job, works with your tools, and opens a change request when it finishes. Session work reaches main through a change request a person reads as a diff, so the work compounds in the repo one reviewed change at a time.
How a job runs in each
n8n executes what you drew. A run follows the canvas edge by edge and the execution log records each node. When the job changes, you edit the canvas. The flow you draw is the flow that runs, which is what you want when the steps never change.
Kortix hands the job to an agent on its own machine. The agent plans, installs what it needs, and works until the job is done; only what it commits survives. Finished work reaches main as a change request a person reviews. Thousands of agents in parallel on one config, each on its own cloud computer.
What doesn't decide the choice
Models do not settle this comparison. n8n connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and open-source models. Kortix takes any model provider with your own keys. On model choice the two are even.
Connectors do not separate them either. n8n counts 1,500+ integrations and 9,000+ workflow templates. Kortix reaches 3,000+ apps in a click, plus MCP, OpenAPI, Postman, GraphQL and raw HTTP, with connector credentials brokered server-side and never entering the machine. Both plug into the systems a mid-size company already runs.
Where each wins
n8n wins the chartable job: a nightly sync between CRM and warehouse, a form that becomes a ticket, an invoice that files itself into accounting. Same steps, same order, on every run. For that shape of work a drawn flow is the right tool, and Kortix's own repository says as much, pointing readers who want a visual flowchart of fixed steps to workflow builders such as n8n (Kortix on GitHub).
Kortix wins the job nobody can chart in advance: research a market and write a one-page brief, reproduce an issue and open a change request, reconcile a month of records. The path only becomes clear while the agent is working, which is what a canvas cannot hold. The work also compounds in the repo: every skill the agent builds, every memory file and every connector edit lands as a reviewed change you can grep and roll back.
So the call comes down to your backlog. If it holds fixed flows, n8n runs them well. If it holds open-ended work, that is Kortix's ground: the open-source system you own end to end. For the longer head-to-head, read Kortix vs n8n on the Kortix blog.
Get started with open-source Kortix
Three commands take you from nothing to a running project:
curl -fsSL https://kortix.com/install | bash
kortix init
kortix shipkortix init scaffolds a repo with agents, skills and kortix.yaml. kortix ship brings it live. If you would rather not install anything, create a project and start a session in the browser on Kortix.

n8n vs Kortix questions
Kortix is open source, so you can read the code, fork it and audit it. n8n describes itself as fair-code, not open source, and its docs call it a fair-code workflow automation tool.
Yes. Kortix runs on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network, and self-host is free. n8n self-hosts with Docker, or runs on n8n Cloud.
Not for fixed flows. When the same steps must run in the same order, a drawn n8n flow stays the right tool. Kortix is for work whose steps you cannot list in advance.
Both connect to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and open-source models. Kortix also takes any model provider with your own keys.
Session work reaches main through a change request a person reads as a diff. n8n runs the flow and sends results to the connected apps.
